Education

East Ham Technical College, London, England: 3 year diploma course in Graphic Design, Typography and Illustration... with an additional 1 year specializing in Illustration under the guidance of award-winning illustrator, Ralph Steadman.

Studied advanced animation techniques extensively with Ken Harris (original lead animator of "Bugs Bunny," "Roadrunner," etc. at Warner Brothers), Art Babbit (original lead animator on "Pinocchio," "Fantasia," etc. at Disney) and personal assistant, then graduating to fulltime director/animator, for Richard Williams (3 times Oscar winner and author of "The Animator's Survival Kit").

Experience

DigiPen Institute of Technology: (2005 – current) Dean of Animation Department, including supervision of junior and senior final projects. Also teaching '2D', 'Sprite' and 'Flash' animation classes.

The Animaticus Foundation: (Established 2006) Founder and President. The Animaticus Foundation was formed to 'preserve', 'teach' and 'evolve' the art form of traditional 2D animation in the digital age. Part of this remit is to host (with Festival Director Ken Rowe) the twice-annually '2D OR NOT 2D Animation Festival' in Seattle, WA… the inaugural event of which was held in November 2006, with keynote speakers Roy E. Disney, Tom Wilson, Nancy Beiman as well as myself. Subsequent speakers included Don Hahn and Michel Gagne.

Henry Cogswell College: (2001 – 2006) Fulltime Educator, teaching '2D Animation', 'Storyboarding & Animatics', 'Directing & Production', 'History of Animation'.

Animus Productions/Entertainments: (20 years - till 1998), Founder/Owner, Director, Head Design/Animation. Awards won for: "Hokusai" (British Academy Award), PBS Special "Cathedral" (Blue Ribbon Award) (also directed/animated companion PBS film; "Pyramid"), "Ink Thief" Utilizing live action, CGI Graphics, 2D/3D animation, 1994 New York Film and Television Award Honored Finalist, and various other awards including: Clios, Los Angeles Advertising Award, Chicago Animation Festival 1st place, etc.

Richard Williams Animation Limited: 7 years, Personal Assistant to Richard Williams on "A Christmas Carol" (Academy Award) and Director, Designer, Animator of numerous projects. Awards won for "Pink Panther Strikes Again" (Design & Art Directors Award) and a variety of advertising awards.

Halas and Batchelor: 5 years, Head of Design, Commercials, Short Films "Jackson Five" TV Series, "Tomfoolery." Awards for the short films "Quartet" (wrote and directed) and "A Short Tall Story" (wrote and directed).

Author

"How To Make Animated Films": (Published June 2009). The ultimate coursebook on core animation techniques, as well as the production of animated films. Including an accompanying DVD of lectures and examples of the principles of movement being taught.

"Animation from Pencils to Pixels ~ Classical Techniques for Digital Animators": (Published August 2006). The ultimate book on traditional animation techniques, encapsulating an over 30 year, award-winning experience of 2D animation production. The book also includes a 'work in progress' disk copy of my latest film homage to the great moments of animated film history, "Endangered Species".

"The Animator's Workbook": Published by Watson-Guptill, over 80,000 copies sold worldwide. Widely acknowledged for over two decades as the definitive book on traditional animation techniques.

Lecturer

To international audiences including the Norwegian Film Institute - Oslo, Swedish Film Institute - Stockholm, Tri-be-ca Grill Guest Director - New York, Israel Animation Guild - Tel Aviv, etc. Featured in multiple television and print interviews.

Awards Won
